- If white vertical lines appear on the User Settings page, continue to STEP 2.

2. Verify the toner mode.

At the bottom of the first box on the User Settings report is Replace Toner, to the right will either be the words STOP or CONTINUE.

Image

- If the word STOP is listed, go to STEP 4.

- If the word CONTINUE is listed, continue to STEP 3.

3. Is the message 'Toner Low' or 'Replace Toner' on the LCD?

- If the LCD shows the date and time, continue to STEP 4.

- If the LCD reads 'Toner Low' or 'Replace Toner', the machine is in Continue Mode, which means that it has been enabled to print beyond the guaranteed life of the toner cartridge.  When the machine is in Continue Mode, Brother cannot guarantee the print quality of the toner cartridge because it is past the expected life and it is likely that the toner cartridge needs to be replaced in order to resolve this issue.  You can try to continue troubleshooting the issue by continuing to STEP 4.

4. Perform an automatic drum cleaning by following the steps below:

a. Press the STOP/EXIT button to make sure the machine is in Ready mode.  Have a sheet of A4 or Letter size paper available.

NOTE: Make sure that the two green envelope levers on the left and right hand sides are in the up position.

c. Open the manual feed slot cover.

Image

d. Press CLEAR and MENU at the same time.  The 'Drum Cleaning' message will appear on the LCD.

e. Using both hands, slide the manual feed paper guides to the width of the paper that you are going to use.

Image

f. Using both hands, put one piece of A4 or Letter size paper in the manual feed slot until the top edge of the paper touches the paper feed roller.  When you feel the machine pull in the paper, let go.  The machine will start the Drum Cleaning process.

Image

NOTE:

- The machine makes a mechanical noise during the Drum Cleaning process because the machine rotates the OPC drum in reverse.  This noise is not due to a malfunction of the machine.

- DO NOT put more than one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot at any one time, as it may cause a jam.

- If the paper in the manual feed slot is other than A4 or Letter size, the machine will stop the Drum Cleaning process and eject the paper.

- Make sure that the paper is straight and in the proper position in the manual feed slot.  If it is not, it may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper jam.

- DO NOT close the back cover (face-up output tray) during the Drum Cleaning process.  The machine will stop the Drum Cleaning process and eject the paper.  It may cause a jam.

- If the machine receives a print job before you put the sheet of paper in the manual feed slot, the machine will finish the Drum Cleaning process first, and then print the print job.

g. When the machine has finished cleaning, the machine returns to Ready mode.  Close the back cover.

5. Print a User Settings report.

b. Open the front cover.

c. Remove the drum and toner assembly.

Image

NOTE: We recommend that you place the toner and drum assembly on a piece of paper in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

d. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the green lock lever on the left side of the drum unit and lifting the toner out.

Image

NOTE: Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on hands or clothing, immediately wipe it off or wash it with cold water.

7. Clean the drum surface and scanner glass window by following the instructions listed below:

a. Gently rock the toner from side to side to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

Image

b. Inside the drum unit there is a roller. Remove any excess toner from the roller by using a soft lint-free cloth lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol); gently wipe the roller from side to side. If you do not have any isopropyl alcohol available and needs to purchase some at your local drugstore; make sure to buy the 91% strength version. If 91% strength alcohol isn't available, then 70-75% strength should be purchased. The drum roller can be turned by moving the white gear on the far left side. The entire circumference should be cleaned.  Make sure all excess moisture on the drum is dried.

Image

c. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab located the top of the drum unit, from left to right several times. Return the green tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.

Image

d. With the drum still removed from the machine, clean the laser glass with a soft DRY cloth. Use caution because internal components can be hot. The laser glass is a thin piece of glass located on the roof inside the Brother machine where the drum unit is installed. You need to reach up into the laser glass opening about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch to reach the laser glass.  DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol or any type of liquid to clean the glass.

Image

e. Reinstall the toner into the drum (be sure it clicks into place). If you put it in properly, the green lock lever will lift automatically.  Reinstall the drum and toner assembly into the machine.

Image

f. Close the front cover, pressing firmly on each side until the cover clicks into place.

g. Print 10 to 15 blank pages from the computer to further clean any remaining debris left on the drum surface.

c. Press the UP OR DOWN ARROW key to select User Settings.  Press OK.

d. Press START.  Press STOP/EXIT. The machine will print out a report.

- If no white vertical lines appear, discontinue troubleshooting.

- If white vertical lines appear on the User Settings page, a second manual drum cleaning may be needed.  Remove the drum and toner unit and remove the toner cartridge from the drum.  Repeat STEPS 7b through 8.

9. If there are still white vertical lines after doing two (2) manual drum cleanings, the toner (TN420 or TN450) will need to be replaced.
